Walk and Talk Therapy
"I took a walk in the woods along the River Boyne with Eugene and came out taller than the trees."
WHAT IS WALK & TALK Counselling & Psychotherapy?
Does the idea of sitting across from a counsellor make you uncomfortable? Maybe you feel claustrophobic, analysed or judged? Traditional therapy is not right for everyone so this is an alternative approach to traditional therapy that will have the same benefits.
Walk & Talk Therapy involves engaging in therapy while walking outside in a natural environment. Since most of our days are spent sitting indoors; having the option to engage in therapy while getting some exercise and exposure to nature can be a welcome and therapeutic change. There is a physical release that happens when we move our bodies. Feelings and thoughts can flow when we are walking & talking and nature has a calming influence and can help bring greater awareness.
As the name describes, clients talk with me while walking outdoors rather than sitting down in my office. Walking side by side rather than sitting face-to-face enables some clients to feel more comfortable when sharing in the therapy process. Walk & Talk requires an initial intake counselling session conducted in my office or via Zoom.
I AM NOT OUTDOORSY. I DON’T HIKE. WON’T I HATE THIS?
It hasn’t happened yet. We will meet at a location that works for us both, for a duration of 1 hour. As long as there are no medical reasons that prevents you from walking and if you have a motorized way to participate, that can work as well!. Like in all forms of psychotherapy, the verbal processing of thoughts, emotions and memories can induce uncomfortable feelings and intense emotions. If this is your experience, I’ll be there.
WHAT ABOUT THE WEATHER?
Weather will not have any effect on the sessions, unless there are yellow or red warning issued by Met Eireann. As the saying goes, “there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes”. I will always have a spare rain coat on hand just in case!
CAN I BRING MY DOG TO OUR WALK-TALK SESSION?
Yes, in most cases. When and where we will meet, the length of our session and your dog’s personality and temperament will be considered in determining which if any sessions are appropriate for your dog to attend.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
It is €100 for a one-hour session.
HOW CAN WALK-TALK THERAPY HELP ME?
Walk & Talk therapy offers an opportunity to reduce stress, relieve body tension, improve circulation, breathe deeply and clear the body-mind of intrusive, negative and ruminative thoughts and sensations. These sessions can help you decrease anxiety, regulate mood, enjoy more restful sleep and more. Additionally, you can receive the feel-good brain chemical benefits of exercise, mindfulness practice and eco-psychology. In session, you can enhance insight, release body trauma and alter behaviour patterns while verbally processing your authentic truth.
WHY SHOULD I PARTICIPATE IN WALK & TALK THERAPY?
The combination of movement, tranquillity of being in nature, and a trusting relationship with your therapist can help you achieve your goals more quickly; you will be walking forward to the change that can improve your life.
I DON’T WANT TO GET SWEATY. WILL THAT BE A PROBLEM?
Not for me. The movement in these sessions is easy going, designed to facilitate the psychotherapy process. Your walk & talk experiences are created just for you, reflecting your goals, interests, and state of being at the time we meet. You’ll set the pace and I’ll follow your lead. Alternatively if you’re up for something a bit more strenuous, that can be arranged too.
WHERE WILL WE WALK?
Co. Meath & surrounding counties have lots of beautiful trails that are readily available for use. I have lots of beautiful trails and routes to choose from. In our initial session we will discuss the locations that are most suitable to us both.
DO I HAVE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN WALK & TALK AND ONLINE THERAPY?
Not at all. Walk & Talk therapy requires an initial assessment session conducted via online therapy or in my Navan office. As my client, you are welcome to take advantage of any therapy offering that can help you move forward with your goals. When we schedule our appointments, we will discuss the type of session you would prefer.
WHAT IF I RUN INTO SOMEONE I KNOW?
During a Walk & Talk Therapy session if by chance we happen to run into someone you know; then your therapist will follow your lead and will never compromise your confidentiality. It is up to you to introduce your therapist as you see fit- the choice is yours.
BENEFITS OF WALK & TALK THERAPY
Research shows that walking and exercise can lower levels of depression, anxiety, insomnia, and other health concerns. By simply putting your body in motion, you will be releasing endorphins and getting your blood flowing which can help in finding new creative solutions and perspectives. Some research has also shown that just being in nature can decrease states of aggression, depression and anxiety. Nature can “increase one’s sense of belonging, increase the rate of recovery from fatigue and illness, and prevent future stress.” (McKinney, 2011), In addition, benefits can include increased self-awareness, self-discovery, feelings of tranquillity and self-confidence.
WHAT HAPPENS IN SESSION?
We will meet and start to walk; I have several locations that are perfect, or maybe you the client has a place that you’d like to explore!! . Walking side by side, we’ll discuss what comes to mind for you that day in the context of your overall goals, just as if we were sitting inside an office. I will incorporate many of my psychodynamic approaches in the same way as if in my office. By the end, you’ll will have gained some understanding, let loose a little and noticed a helpful shift in your level of stress and anxiety.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
Wear clothes and shoes that are comfortable for walking.
It is your choice, based upon availability. We will work to be flexible to both our schedules. Saturday hours are sometimes available. Sessions last approx. 1 hour. Longer life coaching sessions can also be arranged.
IS THIS A CARDIO WORKOUT?
The emphasis in a Walk & Talk Therapy session is on the therapy! The walking is a secondary benefit. You set the pace!
WHAT IF I’M NOT IN SHAPE?
Walk & Talk Therapy sessions are held with clients of all shapes, sizes, ages and genders! Our sessions are about you, your pace and your comfort. The focus is on the therapy process not on competition or walking until exhausted. We can take breaks if needed.
WHAT IF MY THERAPIST SEES SOMEONE THEY KNOW?
The focus and support is on you and that our session continues without interruption. Inside or outside the office, we will maintain confidentiality and will not acknowledge you to anyone as my client without your signed consent. The general public is used to seeing people walking together every day- it is part of our normal routine. We are simply two people walking and talking. There is nothing overt that states that this is a therapy session. If you still have concerns about your confidentiality, please feel free to talk with Eugene about this more.
